GABA DA GABANTA BOOK COMPELETE

"Look, I am going to sell my house, as soon as you get your money just rent another house." Amina couldn't bear it anymore, she just walked past them and went to school, walking while crying, and sympathizing with that man and his family. Truly, poverty is not sweet. If people were helping the way they ought to, the wealthy people in this neighborhood could buy a house for every poor person, because they outnumber the poor in the neighborhood. But everyone only cares about themselves. It is only on Fridays that you would see bread being distributed at one house and alala at another. Amina kept thinking if only she were someone else, knowing the agony of poverty; if God blesses her with wealth, she would never let those close to her suffer.

With that, she arrived at school with various thoughts in her mind, alongside the prayer that God would grant her success in life to become somebody.

Yazid apologized to Amra and her group for not being able to stay yesterday to teach them their assignment, so today he stayed to teach them. Fadila spotted him, but she acted as though she didn't even see him, let alone pay attention to him. He only came over to her after he finished with them.

"For God's sake, greet me today. Are you always the one I greet?"

She said, "Did I ask you to greet me?"

"No, I thought it was proper for me to greet you and find out how you are doing."

Instead of answering him, she asked, "Alright, I wanted to ask, how did it go between you and Kankiya yesterday?"

Yazid said, "Yesterday I was at that school until five o'clock, but he didn't return. Even today I came in early, I went to his office, but his secretary said he wasn't around. I sat and waited for him, but he didn't show up."

"You should just write him off."

"Why should I write him off? Did I commit some offense against him? Please tell me."

Fadila looked at him and said, "How would I know even if you committed an offense against him?"

"He is your suitor, he can tell you."

Fadila frowned and said, "Do I look like his peer to you? The thread is not of the same color as the fabric; I am way above his level, so don't you ever link me with him again." A chilling feeling swept through Yazid's body. He is a lecturer, let alone being a big fish himself. He didn't secure a place, nor did he entrust anyone.

"Why do you look so silent?"

"It's nothing, I was just wondering why he is calling me. Is he going to warn me about you?" Quickly, she looked at him and said, "What do you mean?"

"I mean if he says he shouldn't see us together anymore."

In her mind, she thought, 'My, this one is just like a jinni, he's too quick at figuring things out.'

"Why are you silent?"

"Well, if he calls you to warn you, he would be doing me a favor. You cling to me way too much, I don't get this kind of behavior. Look at you, no matter what someone does to you, you never get angry."

He smiled, moving closer to her, which started causing her body to go numb.

"If he did that to me, he wouldn't be fair. You are among the people my heart has accepted to enter my life. From the day you first laughed at my shoe patch, down to my poor English, I didn't feel happy about the way you laughed at me, unlike the laughter of the rest of the class. My life with you is maybe temporary; once we finish school, that's it. But perhaps, if God destines it, you are his wife and you will live together forever." He paused for a moment and then said, "Please Fadila, beg him not to take any step that will break our friendship, let's be friends."

She said, "You go tell him yourself, and where have you ever seen a friendship between a man and a woman?"

"There isn't, but I want us to start one," he said in a very low voice.

She ignored him and continued pressing her phone.

His entire focus was locked on her as he watched her without even blinking.

"Please stop looking at me like that, honestly you are suffocating my life," she said defiantly while rolling her eyes.

He said, "As if I don't have a heart, right?"

"Where did you even have one?" He smiled without saying anything, stood up, and left her seat.

"If you have a heart, don't ever come near where I am, and don't ever talk to me again." He didn't look back, walking away with a smile whose meaning only he knew.

Amina was in class during her lesson at eleven in the morning when their teacher walked in, looked at Amina, and said, "Amina, take your bag and come." Surprised, Amina followed the teacher with her gaze. She saw that it wasn't time for dismissal yet, so where was she going? Thus, she picked up her bag and followed behind him in surprise.

To her astonishment, she saw Daddy standing at the end of their classroom veranda.

She walked up to him and said, "Daddy, is everything alright?"

Instead of answering, he said to her, "Good morning."

She scratched her head a little and said, "Sorry, good morning?"

"I was the one who greeted you first. We didn't meet earlier until now, and I already greeted you."

Amina said, "I'm sorry."

"You didn't do anything wrong, you just need to reply."

"I am feeling shy, I won't be able to reply," she said, lowering her head.

He laughed and said, "Let's go." Without hesitation, she followed him to the car, and he opened the door for her to get in.

Surprise overwhelmed her; she wanted to ask him, but she thought she might commit some offense.

However, unable to hold it in, she asked, "Daddy, where are we going?"

"I am going to sell you," he replied.

"Well, if you sell me, I won't cost much."

He opened his mouth slightly and said, "Says who? You will cost a lot, I've even been paid for you already!" Amina laughed, continuing to look out at the street. But to her surprise, she noticed they were not taking the way home.

She looked at him again and said, "But Daddy..."

"Shhh," he interrupted her.

So she left matters in the hands of God. After driving for quite a while, they entered a neighborhood where vehicles only passed by occasionally. He parked in front of a huge gate. A police officer peeked out and then went to open the gate.

There were about four police officers inside the house who kept waving and greeting him, but he didn't pay attention to them.

"Daddy, they are greeting you," Amina said, looking back.

"Yes, I saw them."

"So why didn't you reply?"

"My, your questions are too many!" She didn't speak again and kept quiet.

He parked in the spacious courtyard of the house, switched off the car engine, and got out.

Amina stayed inside the car, looking around.

He opened the car door, looked at her, and said, "Step down."

Frightened, she said, "Daddy please, where is this place?"

"I have brought you to the person who bought you."

Her whole body went cold as she followed his gaze.

"Step down," he repeated.

With a weak body, she stepped out of the car, looking at the house.

He walked ahead and she followed him. The house was much, much bigger and more well-structured than the one they lived in. He brought out a key and unlocked the front door into the house. It was a massive parlor where you had to climb steps to reach the couches.

Realizing there were no people in the house, Amina's body went cold, and she felt a bit scared.

"Come inside," he said, looking at her.

He clearly saw fear written on her face, which deeply amused him.

Unexpectedly, she felt him take her hand into his, and she got scared as if she was about to run away. He smiled and pulled her hand toward a massive kitchen, then released her hand and looked at her, saying, "Amina, you are my daughter, don't think for a second that I would do anything to harm you. But nonetheless, I enjoyed your reaction to that. I am sorry I brought you without telling you why. This is my house, I mostly use it to lodge my guests. My friends are coming to town, that's why I brought you to cook for them, please. I don't want to order from a restaurant because I trust your cooking. But if you feel it's too much of a burden, it's fine, leave it."

With a weak body, she said, "I will do it."

"If you feel it's a burden, just leave it."

She shook her head and said, "No, it's not a burden. But what should I cook?" She asked, feeling how their isolation was weighing on her.

"Whatever you cook will be fine, they will arrive around noon, insha Allah. I have kept everything ready; if you need anything, let me know." She nodded in agreement.

He turned and left the kitchen. Amina stood there and finished looking around the kitchen, wondering what kind of life Hajiya Zainab lives, seeing that her husband is having guests and wouldn't bring them to her house to have the food cooked there, but rather here? Finding no answer, she began thinking about what to cook.

As for Khalil, he felt like a sick person; he completely lost interest in everything. Only when hunger overwhelmed him did he go into the house to look for something to eat. However, the food tasted like medicine to him, so he left it and stood up. His biggest worry was that Mummy might do something to Hafsa. He had even gone to her room to apologize to her again and explain things, but she refused to listen; she showered him with insults and chased him out.

Unexpectedly, Sir Kankiya walked into Fadila's class. Looking stern, he began explaining that he had swapped his lecture time with the lecturer who was supposed to enter the class. He walked past, dropped his books, and started trying to pull a marker out of his pocket. As he raised his eyes, his gaze locked directly with Yazid.

"Didn't I tell you yesterday to come to my office, that I want to see you?" He spoke, fixing his gaze on Yazid.

"I came, sir, but I didn't find you in the office. I waited for you until almost five."

"You are very stupid, are you going to lie to me?"

"I am not lying, sir."

"Shut up, stand up and leave my class, and don't ever dare attend my lectures again, you undisciplined fellow. And mark you: no 75% attendance, no exams." Fadila completely lost what to do or say; Kankiya's actions were beyond measure and had turned into outright madness. To her surprise, Yazid didn't even make an attempt to beg Kankiya; he stood up and left the class.

As noon approached, Amina finished the cooking that Daddy had given her to do. She was completely exhausted and washed all the utensils she had used. She followed the path she and Daddy had taken to return to the massive parlor, but he wasn't there. She went back to the kitchen, performed ablution, and returned to the parlor carpet to pray. After she finished, Alhaji Ahmad walked in, looked at her, and said, "Well done."

"Thank you, I am done, can I go home now?" She asked anxiously.

He smiled and said, "You will go home, but for now, here is the room where you will take the food. You will wait for me; once they finish and leave, we will go back home together." Amina felt like crying; she completely disliked this isolation of theirs.

He helped her arrange everything in the room himself, opening the food warmers which released a wonderful aroma.

He took Amina to another room after she had picked up the food trays, and locked her inside the room. Then he went back to host his guests.

Amina was utterly terrified; in a house like this, someone could even be kidnapped and no one would know. Amina ate and finished, but the waiting bored her, so she lay down on the carpet below, and a heavy sleep overcame him—her.

He stood over her for a short while, looking at her, then knelt down close to her. "Amina, wake up so you can pray Asr and let's go." Slowly she opened her eyes, startling awake upon seeing Alhaji Ahmad standing over her.

She stood up, rubbing her eyes.

"Let's just go."

"Aren't you going to pray?" She nodded in agreement.

She knelt down to pick up the plate she had eaten from, and he looked at her and said, "Leave it there, everything will be cleaned insha Allah. Let's go, once you pray we will leave, it's already 5:30."

Her mind wasn't at ease until after she prayed, when she saw them drive out of the house, hitting the main road and leaving that place completely.

While on their way, Daddy said, "I am very pleased, you saved my face, they kept thanking you. May God bless you, Ahmad is very grateful."

She looked at him slightly, "Who is Ahmad?" she asked, because she had forgotten his name.

"Fadila and Aminatu's father." She smiled and said, "Oh, I forgot your name."

She leaned against the seat, closing her eyes softly.

"Are you tired?" She nodded in agreement.

"Eyya, sorry then, and please, this is also our secret. You helped your Daddy save face in front of his friends, it is our secret."

"Okay, I won't tell anyone insha Allah," she said with a smile.

He slipped his hand into his pocket, pulled out money in an envelope, and handed it to Amina.

She looked at him and said, "What is this for?"

"It's money I am giving you, a reward for what you did for me, since I interrupted your studies and you worked for me."

"Well, you just had to show favoritism even though you said I am your daughter," she said, pouting.

"What favoritism?"

"When you give Fadila chores, do you pay her?"

He was amazed by Amina; she didn't fear him at all now, nor did she hesitate to talk back to him.

"Well, I do reward her with something to make her happy."

"You have done many things for me; you feed me, provide a place to sleep, and pay for my education. Why must you give me something extra?"

"That is a completely different matter."

Amina was silent for a moment, then said, "Daddy."

"Yes, Daddy's daughter."

"Can I ask you for a favor?"

"Straight ahead, what do you need?"

Then she narrated to him about the house she passed by earlier in the morning where people were being evicted with their belongings.

"Now what do you want done?"

"Please pay for them, since you have money."

"Who told you I have money?"

"You told me you make money from selling things, and look at your car and your house—you definitely have a lot of money."

He smiled, stroking his long beard which had a few strands of white mixed with black.

"Daddy, you didn't say anything."

"Let me ask my wife; if she agrees, their rent will be paid."

Amina frowned and said, "Then it won't be paid at all."

"What do you mean?"

"That woman is a miser, she will never allow anything good to be done."

Alhaji Ahmad frowned and said, "My wife is a miser?"

Amina kept silent, looking slightly to the side, because if she had the opportunity, she would have rained insults on Hajiya Zainab to vent her anger.

"I'm sorry, but truly she doesn't..."

"You!" He barked a shout at her that startled her into looking at him.

"Right in front of me you are insulting the mother of my children?" She felt like saying, "She also insults my father right in front of me," but since he turned out to be her Alhaji Ahmad, she had no choice but to swallow her words.

He parked the car and looked at her, saying, "Get out of my car."

"Home is far from here," she said, sounding like she was about to cry.

"I don't care, get out," he said in a serious tone. She angrily opened the car door and stepped out, her spirit deeply aggrieved. He gave a small, short smile, drove his car forward, and left.

Amina started walking home on foot, wondering how she would make it all the way. Amina's spirit was severely angered by what Alhaji Ahmad did to her. He had been acting nice to her, but because she spoke about that wicked woman, he subjected her to humiliation. Despite all the hard work she did for him, he didn't see it. What stopped his pampered wife from doing it for him? Thus, Amina muttered and carried on an internal monologue in her mind.

The honking of a car horn that she heard repeatedly in her ears made her look back. The driver smiled at her. She felt like she knew him and started trying to figure out where she knew him from.

"Are you going home?"

"Yes," she answered him.

"It looks like you don't recognize me. I am Bilal from your lane; we always greet each other when you are going to school." Only then did he remember him; he often wished her a safe return whenever she was going to school.

"Hello, how are you?"

"Fine, Alhamdulillah, come let's finish the trip."

Amina hesitated briefly. It was getting pitch dark, and she knew Baba would start wondering where she had stayed. If she insisted on walking home, Maghrib prayer would catch her on the way. Therefore, she had no choice but to follow Bilal. As they drove along, he chatted with her, but her mind was entirely elsewhere—her only wish was to reach home.

Upon arriving at the front of the house, Amina started trying to open the car door while thanking him. Bilal said, "It's nothing, let me come greet your father too."

Amina didn't say anything to him; she didn't want to argue after he had helped her.

They entered the house together, but Baba was not around because the call to Maghrib prayer had just begun.

Amina looked at him and said, "I think he went to the mosque. Thank you very much."

Bilal asked, "Can you give me your phone number?"

"No, I don't have a phone." While they were talking, Alhaji Ahmad came out heading to the mosque. From a distance, he gave them a strange, harsh look—especially at Amina. But Amina ignored him and refocused her attention on Bilal.

Even though Amina's heart skipped a beat from the kind of look Alhaji Ahmad gave them, she put on a bold face and refused to even lift her head, let alone show that she knew he was directing that look at her. Bilal greeted Alhaji Ahmad, but he gave a half-hearted reply and walked away. As soon as Amina saw Alhaji Ahmad leave, she bid Bilal farewell and rushed inside the house.

As for Fadila, ever since Kankiya chased Yazid out of the class, her mind had been in turmoil. She didn't know what she ought to do; she felt as if she was walking on thorns as she waited for Kankiya to leave so she could leave too. Seeing that he had no intention of leaving, she stood up and asked to be excused to go out, but Kankiya bluntly refused her. She felt like going over to strangle him and smash his head; her hatred for him multiplied in her heart. After he stayed for over two hours before finally leaving the class, Fadila walked out and looked everywhere to see if she would spot Yazid, but there was neither sight nor sign of Yazid. She checked everywhere she thought she might find him, but she didn't see him, leading her to think he had gone home out of pride and hurt feelings. She kept thinking about what kind of punishment or step she should take against Kankiya, but then she thought that if she did something impulsively, he might hurt Yazid further. Without reaching any conclusion, she got into her car and drove home filled with anxiety. Even at home, she couldn't find peace. Besides, she didn't have Yazid's phone number, so she couldn't call him on the phone to find out what happened after he left the class. In the middle of these thoughts, Kankiya's call came through. She felt like throwing the phone away, but she fought her impulse and answered.

"Peace of God be upon you, my bride." She felt like he had poured fire into her heart; she couldn't stand even hearing his voice.

"Why did you call me? Didn't I warn you about calling me?"

"Are you angry with me because I chased your suitor out of the class? Look, what I told you, Fadila: as long as he doesn't stay away from you, I will keep making things difficult for him."

"Who told you Yazid is my suitor? There is nothing resembling romance between me and Yazid. And let me tell you something: by God, if you don't watch your steps regarding this romance issue, I will do something to you that you will never forget until you die."

He laughed and said, "I will do it to Yazid too, because I realized that in this world, if you want to hurt you, you just touch Yazid."

Then lowering his voice, he said, "Come on, Fadila, you are the one who made things so complicated like this. I am very, very jealous, which is why I cannot bear seeing you with someone else. By God, if Yazid stays out of your way, I have no business with him. Now tell me, when am I coming to your house?"

"Abdurrasheed Kankiya, if not for the respect I have for chalk and the duster, I would have shown you who Fadila is. I've noticed that your ignorance of who I am is why you are standing in my way however you please."

"Hmmm, whatever the case, I know you are a human being, and no matter your status, you will eventually have to marry under the shadow of a man someday. Fadila, let's stop having these disagreements, let me stop torturing innocent people, stay out of his way and give me the chance to show you love."

"Fine, you and I shall wrestle and see. Look closely at yourself first, and then look closely at me to know who I am. Before you say you love me, know my status first. I swear, if you continue harassing him, I will show you what I am capable of doing."

Kankiya took a deep breath and said, "Is it because of that Yazid that you are telling me all these things?" "Yes, I told you, do whatever you can." With that, she hung up the phone, feeling like she wanted to have Kankiya locked up. She felt pity for Yazid; if his career is ruined, he would have been wronged. Yet Kankiya wanted to use that opportunity to force her to love him. She had never pitied any human being in her life as much as she pitied Yazid. She only saw his good character and felt that if he was harmed, he wouldn't be treated justly. He had good traits, hurting no one—so why should anyone keep hurting him? She remembered his daring nature, especially in the examination hall to prevent anyone from failing, and his extreme obedience to teachers, yet that didn't stop him from being humiliated in front of the class without any consideration for his good qualities. She pressed her forehead, feeling like her head was about to burst from the lack of an outlet.

On Khalil's part, he was also deep in distress. Hafsa opened WhatsApp on the phone he gave her and even sent him messages through WhatsApp. She was sweet-talking him, giving him special attention, prayers, advice, and romantic words, which made his love for her grow stronger in his heart. Mummy had completely cut him off, refusing to get involved in his affairs, all because of his love for Hafsa.

Mummy's total anger towards him didn't sit well with him either, which drove him to try once more to go comfort her and explain the situation between him and Hafsa, hoping God would make her understand. With a greeting, he walked into Mummy's bedroom and found her sitting on her bed, tapping away on a computer with a calculator beside her—apparently counting money.

The moment she raised her head and looked at him once, she turned her head back down.

2. Summary

The narrative captures escalating tensions and emotional turmoil across multiple fronts. Amina, deeply affected by poverty and the harsh realities of neighbors who ignore the struggles around them, goes to school and is unexpectedly summoned by Alhaji Ahmad ("Daddy"). He takes her to a massive, isolated house to cook for his upcoming guests. After working hard, she feels trapped and anxious, later interacting briefly with Bilal on her way home. When she casually mentions Alhaji Ahmad's wife as a miser, Ahmad flies into a rage, humiliates her, and throws her out of the car, forcing her to walk part of the way home.

Simultaneously, at school, Sir Kankiya maliciously targets and expels Yazid from class out of jealousy and possessiveness over Fadila, deeply outraging Fadila who fiercely defends Yazid against Kankiya’s manipulative threats. Meanwhile, Khalil remains distressed over his mother's (Mummy's) cold shoulder as he leans deeper into his relationship with Hafsa, who showers him with affection via WhatsApp.

3. Description

Set against the backdrop of local academic and domestic life in northern Nigeria, the excerpt vividly portrays stark socioeconomic disparities, emotional manipulation, and complex personal relationships. It contrasts the quiet, humbling empathy of characters like Amina with the authoritarian cruelty and arrogance of authority figures like Kankiya and the volatile mood swings of domestic providers. The setting shifts dynamically from impoverished streets and school environments to opulent, isolated luxury villas.

4. Comments

  • The Theme of Power and Empathy: Amina's sensitivity to poverty highlights a stark contrast with the self-absorbed wealthy class. Her empathy for the struggling family underlines a compassionate heart.
  • Toxic Authority: Figures like Sir Kankiya abuse their academic authority to settle personal vendettas and emotionally manipulate students, showcasing the dark side of institutional power.
  • Complex Dynamics: The relationships—such as Fadila's fierce defense of Yazid versus Kankiya's coercive possessiveness, and Khalil's alienation from his mother due to his devotion to Hafsa—drive high dramatic tension.

5. Conclusions

The chapter concludes on a cliffhanger of heavy domestic strain. Amina is left shaken by Alhaji Ahmad's sudden cruelty and volatile temper despite her hard work for him, while navigating unwanted complications with Bilal. Fadila stands firm against Kankiya's threats regarding Yazid, and Khalil faces a cold, unyielding wall from his mother as he seeks reconciliation over his relationship with Hafsa.
