TANTABARA BOOK COMPLETE

He entered just the way Sadeeq did; he did the same. Seeing someone on a chair resembling his son—whom he had given up hope of seeing for five long years—today he was looking at him right before his eyes as if it were a miracle.

Slowly, he walked over, steadying himself by holding onto the arm of the chair so his legs wouldn't fail him before reaching his own flesh and blood.

With a trembling hand, he touched the cheeks of Ahmad, who had drifted so deep into a world of unconsciousness that he knew nothing of what was happening around him.

"Ah... Ah... Ahmad! Could you really be alive all these long years? Where have you gone that we didn't know? How did your trail vanish without a trace, neither on earth nor in the sky?"

He raised his eyes and looked at Detective Sadeeq after spending a moment raving over his son.

Sadeeq had been standing rigid ever since AM Aliyu entered, watching them, but he turned and bowed respectfully.

"Sadeeq, you told me he entered completely fine. So what caused him to do this?"

"Um, Abbah, I don't know either. Just before you came in, he clutched his head, and then I saw him collapse."

"And what are we waiting for? Look at his body, he doesn't even look like himself! Quickly, notify the medical sample team to prepare a private jet to take him abroad. He needs medical tests and proper care. He should get at least a two-year rest before coming back."

"Alright Abbah, it's done. Everything will be arranged right away just as you said."

True to his word, being men of wealth and influence, before nightfall everything was arranged and they flew out to Egypt. AM Aliyu sent him alone since most of his life had been spent there, meaning he wouldn't struggle to settle in.

Sameer was sitting in the living room with the remote in his hand, watching a military movie and giving it his full attention. Beside him sat Fatee, her face scrunched up as if about to burst with anger, casting furious side-eyes at Sameer. Maimuna noticed her; she was sitting opposite them, typing away on a laptop.

"Hey Fatee, why don't you take that attitude to your room? You have everything in your own side, you aren't lacking anything. What is the reason for this anger?"

Maimuna spoke to her calmly, but Fatee remained completely unfazed, as if she had been pinched by something tough.

"Haba Anty Maimuna, how can you say that? Don't you see that I was the first one to take the remote, but he snatched it away? If someone speaks, they say you'll be beaten just because he is stronger. What is there to watch in these stubborn brutes?"

She pointed at the TV. Sameer heard her, but he didn't say a word; instead, he turned the volume up even higher. She knew better than anyone that his silence meant trouble; if she pushed him too far, he would hit her, because he had a hot temper just like their mother.

"I swear I'm going to tell Abbah! He leaves for work and you come back home just to disturb people."

Sameer dropped the remote, let out a sigh, and looked at her with utter annoyance.

"Are you playing with me, or do you think just because you're the youngest in this house you can do whatever you want? Ummah is not here, so you better watch yourself or I will break your bones right here. You're going to tell Abbah that I came back from work? Well, why don't we both tell him—or do you want me to spill the secret about you skipping school? Let's just tell him everything!"

"Ehh, I heard you, but at least I don't run around chasing boyfriends for fun!" she retorted, twisting her mouth.

Sameer dropped his jaw, staring at her. He stood up to strike her when his phone rang. He paused, checked the screen, and seeing it was a call from work regarding official matters, he let it go, picked up the call, and walked away.

Maimuna and the others in the living room watched as he took a seat and said into the phone: "What are you saying? Yah Ahmad, did you really see him? Could it be true? And even Abbah went to see him?..."

"Which Ahmad?"

Hajiya Maryam's voice interrupted him. She had just returned from an outing. She was wearing an expensive, custom-designed designer abaya that must have cost a fortune, paired with a matching headscarf, designer handbag, and custom shoes that even a governor's wife would envy. Even AM Aliyu himself often wondered how she managed to acquire such lavish wealth for herself, which ultimately earned her deep respect among many people.

"I asked you which Ahmad. Am I not asking you?" she repeated, fixing her gaze on Sameer. They all knew the daily dramas in this household involving their mother and the older children whenever someone crossed paths with another.

"Um... Ummah, actually... actually...?"

"Actually what?!!" she snapped, raising her voice. Even though Sameer was a soldier, he was startled by how drastically her demeanor shifted.

"Ummah, Ahmad was seen this morning! Abbah even went to see him, but they said he collapsed, so they flew him out to Egypt right away!"

"Egypt? Just upon seeing him, they flew him out? For what reason?"

"Ummah, they said he was unwell after regaining consciousness."

"Uhm," she muttered, letting out a heavy breath and clenching her fist. At that moment, looking at her, you couldn't tell whether she felt grief or pure terror and anxiety.

"Fatee, has your father returned?"

"No, Ummah, he hasn't."

"When he comes back, let me know."

Without saying another word, she turned and walked toward her private wing, as Sameer and the others were in the main family lounge.

Right on her way to her room, she pulled out her phone and began dialing frantically, urgently trying to reach someone.

"Hello Neelah? Quickly check for me right now: is it true that the person who appeared is actually Ahmad, or is it someone else? I want details right this second. Make sure no one knows you're doing this, and don't involve the organization."

"Alright, Your Ladyship, I'll check right now."

"If it turns out to be him, we are in deep, monumental trouble, because our entire plan will fall apart. So tread carefully and find out everything for me. By the way, have you seen any dispatch yet?"

"I haven't, Your Ladyship, but don't worry, InshaAllah there's no problem. Everything will go smoothly, and no one will discover anything."

"And what about the box?"

"Hmm, that's normal too, since there hasn't been any mention of the government having it, or of it surfacing anywhere. So everything will proceed smoothly soon."

"Ugh, how did this happen so unexpectedly? All our plans to keep him discredited worldwide were ruined the moment he returned... tschew!"

Hajiya Maryam dropped the call, but just as she pushed open her door to enter, she heard the sound of shattering glass from the living room where she had left Sameer and the others. She recognized Mulaifah's voice; she knew no one else in the house had a temper like hers. She closed her eyes, shook her head, and marched back to the living room.

The center glass table in the middle of the room was smashed to pieces, and Mulaifah stood there with tears streaming down her face.

"Why would they do this to me? Everyone knows that for all these years, I've been waiting for Ahmad, fully believing he would someday return to me! And now that he's back, they fly him abroad without even telling me?!"

"Mulaifah, what nonsense are you coming here to pull?" Hajiya Maryam lashed out in anger and frustration. "Just because you are an in-law doesn't make you the owner of this house! This house—whether you like it or not—I have authority over it too, since my mother was of this household! I know why you're throwing this tantrum: all your scheming failed because he came back! Just wait and see, the marriage that was called off because of his death is going to be solemnized now, mark my words!"

"Tse! What father in his right mind would marry you to him? Are you not a divorcee, and besides, do you even know if he has a wife and children where he was?"

"Ahhhh! I swear I would kill and burn her! Ahmad is mine, and mine alone! There is no bastard woman on the face of this earth who will share him—it never was, and never will be! And you calling me a divorcee? As if your own mother wasn't a divorcee when she was married..."

Tass! Hajiya Maryam landed a sharp slap across Mulaifah's right cheek, instantly halting her fiery outburst.

Mulaifah opened her mouth to retaliate, but catching sight of AM Aliyu walking in, she burst into tears and rushed toward him.

"Abba, look! Look at how she mercilessly slapped me just because I said Ahmad is back! Everyone knows they hated him and never wanted him to return. Abba, tell me which country he's in so I can go see him; I can't spend a single day without seeing him!"

She wailed dramatically, weeping as if she hadn't just been hurling insults a moment ago.

"Alright, quiet down. And Maryam, why would you..."

AM Aliyu cut his sentence short as she shot him a fierce, venomous glare.

She turned around and stormed out of the room, her high heels clicking loudly against the tiles as she marched aggressively.

He let out a sigh and looked at Mulaifah.

"Look, quiet down now. Go see Mammah, I'll be there in a moment."

With that, he walked off to his own quarters. As for Fatee and the others, they just watched. Used to witnessing this household drama in the past, it had only paused because there was no one to fight over—now that he was back, the drama was resuming.

"Heeho! Entertainment, entertainment! I swear I missed this house, there's been no drama. But now that Yah Ahmad is back, I know the show is continuing!"

"Fatee, are you out of your mind? The turmoil between your parents is what you want?"

"Ah well, what can I do, Anty Maimuna? Even if you hate it, it's not going to stop. So you might as well sit back, watch, and enjoy the show. Mulaifah won't stop her madness of showing Ahmad obsessive love, and he won't stop treating her with contempt like he used to. Mommy won't stop showing him hatred, and he won't spare her either! So you see, we're going to get plenty of drama unless someone changes their ways—which I doubt!"

Finishing her statement, she walked off toward her section, humming a song.

Meanwhile, over at Mammah's place, Mulaifah rushed in as if she had been thrown through the door. Though she was fiery and rebellious, Mammah was the younger sister of AM Aliyu; after her passing, Mammah took Mulaifah in instead of sending her to her father's house, which made them very close, viewing her almost like a biological daughter.

Ever since Ahmad returned from Egypt ten years ago where he lived, she had fallen deeply in love with him. Though he initially brushed her off, he eventually started tolerating her presence in his life—all in vain until family elders intervened. Though reluctant, Ahmad had agreed to their engagement.

Right as the wedding preparations were underway, he had an accident and supposedly died. Following that, Mulaifah cried to the point of near madness over his death. She even married someone else later, but quickly ended it and returned to the house.

She and Hajiya Maryam were at perpetual war due to Mulaifah's domineering attitude and her open affection for Ahmad. On Hajiya Maryam's part, everyone knew she abhorred anyone wielding authority in her domain, let alone anything concerning Ahmad—she didn't want to hear about him, let alone see him. Thus, she never turned to God to solve her problems, but relied on her own strength—just like Mulaifah.

Chapter 2

"Mammah, Mammah! Where are you?" Mulaifah called out urgently as she stepped into Mammah's quarters.

"What is the matter that you're shouting my name like this?" Mammah emerged from her room, holding her prayer beads (tasbih) and draped in her prayer hijab, as always.

She sat down on a chair, and Mulaifah immediately rushed to rest her head on her lap.

"Mammah, haven't you heard the news? Ahmad is back! They thought he was dead all this time, but God destined for us to be together—that must be why he 'died' right when we were supposed to get married!"

Mammah remained silent, looking thoughtful before gently stroking Mulaifah's head resting on her lap. Seeing her silence, Mulaifah looked up.

"Mammah, you aren't saying anything? Aren't you surprised by his return?"

Mammah offered a mature, knowing smile and replied, "Ah, it's not like that. Who wouldn't find such a miraculous event astonishing? But nothing is greater than the power of God, so this isn't a shock; rather, it is a joy that God brought him back to us. Where is he? Is he inside the house?"

"No, Abbah sent him abroad for medical checks."

"Ah, well, that's also good. But someone from the family should have been sent to look after him instead of leaving him all alone, especially since his health is fragile. Let your father come in so we can discuss it, and I'll go see his condition myself."

"Yay! Mammah, if you go, I'm coming with you to see him. I can't wait to see him!"

"Uhm, Mulaifah, you are always dancing to your own tune. You know very well that Amadu hates being forced into anything with you. Last time, it was your father who forced him, which is why he agreed to marry you. Now, you know he won't be willing to repeat that mistake."

Mulaifah burst into childish tears upon hearing Mammah's words.

"Mammah, haba! Why are you like this? I know he loves me too! Even if he doesn't, I'll make him love me now. And I know you'll beg Abba to bring back our marriage plans, right?"

"I made you no such promise! Do you want people to trample on his rights? He is already dealing with the trauma of his situation with that wife of his. There is no such talk right now; if he comes back and wants you, fine. If he doesn't, I will stand by him."

Mulaifah got up from Mammah's lap, staring at her in shock, realizing Mammah was entirely serious. She knew this would happen; despite being Mammah's favorite, Mammah would never cross the line against Ahmad's wishes. When he was around, the only time he smiled and chatted freely was right there in Mammah's quarters.

Furious, Mulaifah stormed out of Mammah's quarters and headed to her own room, her mind consumed with figuring out how to claim the love of her life.

Meanwhile, in Cairo, Egypt, Ahmad lay on a hospital bed dressed in patient attire, with sensors and monitoring wires attached to his head to scan his brain activity.

He opened his eyes for the first time since arriving in the country three days ago.

Today, he heard distant murmurs, but in his immediate room, there was no sound of human presence—it seemed he was all alone.

He slowly sat up, staring at the diagnostic equipment in front of him.

Why is it that every time I wake up in a hospital, I'm treated like trash? Am I always stuck in a hospital?

He let out a small hiss of irritation, unplugged the intravenous lines connected to his body, and swung his legs over the side of the bed intending to get up. But he stopped as a sharp pain seized his head. With a frustrated expression, he ripped off the head-wires completely and headed toward the bathroom located on the left side of the room.

He washed his face and looked at himself in the mirror. He gasped, stepping back in shock at how emaciated, dark, and prematurely aged he looked compared to how he remembered himself.

Could what Sadeeq said actually be true—that five years have passed since I left home? Where have I been all this time? Was I just sleeping until now, or did I live an entirely different life without knowing?

Overwhelming confusion clouded his mind as he stepped out of the bathroom.

He froze right at the doorway upon seeing a crowd of people inside the room. He recognized every single one of them at a glance, but he ignored them and walked straight back to his bed.

Mammah was the first to speak to him, full of care.

"Amadu, you're awake! How is your body? Is anything paining you? Do you recognize us?"

He wanted to lie back down, but seeing her bombard him with questions, he looked at her and offered a small, faint smile.

"Mammah, of course I recognize you. I'm completely fine, nothing is wrong with me except the headache which has subsided a bit. How could I forget you? Although... you've grown older, have you started chewing kola nuts?"

Mammah let out a hearty laugh filled with delight at his remark. Before she could say anything, Mulaifah rushed close to him, practically throwing herself onto his body.

"Honey, do you recognize me too?"

He gave her a cold, dismissive look. Seeing her wide, pleading eyes staring at him made him speak with annoyance.

"Mulaifah, will you ever change? You've grown older in appearance, but you're still the same—do you have to climb all over me before you stop?"

She didn't get offended by his harsh words; just hearing him call her name was enough to fill her heart with joy.

Ignoring her, Ahmad looked at Saleem, who was sitting next to Sadeeq.

"Gentle bro, you've also grown a lot! But now you've become a doctor, haven't you? When I last knew you, you were in your first year of secondary school."

Saleem smiled, remembering those times.

"Yes, I finished, Yah Ahmad, and even started working last year. Sameer is working at your barracks, Maimuna is studying law, and Fatee is still in school."

"I didn't ask you about how they are doing. I asked about you," he said, frowning.

All of them exchanged glances. He was still just like his old self—impossible to please or flatter.

"Oh, AA Hamma, did you not see me at all?" Sadeeq chimed in playfully.

"I didn't see you until you spoke."

With that, he laid back down on his bed. Realizing he wanted to rest, they all walked out.

As soon as they left, he got back up and headed into the bathroom. He did this deliberately so they would leave; since he wasn't used to being around crowds anymore, it made him deeply uneasy.

He performed ablution and returned to the room to make up for the prayers he had missed. He prayed for a long time until his physical strength was completely exhausted before pausing. He spent an equally long time engaged in supplications (adhkar).

He shook his head, desperately wanting to clear his mind of the haunting thoughts, but it was futile.

He heard the door open. He didn't even raise his head to see who entered until the person spoke, at which point he recognized Sadeeq's voice.

"AA Hamma, I know you're thinking deeply. Whatever it is, leave it for now because you desperately need rest."

Without listening to Sadeeq, Ahmad went straight to the point.

"What has happened to me? Where have I been all this time? What kind of life did I live without my knowledge, Sadeeq? Imagine how I feel right now. Whose life did I enter? Did I harm someone, or did I do good? I know nothing!"

"It's true, the situation is unpleasant, but there's nothing you can do except be patient. InshaAllah, you will remember everything gradually. But for now, don't let stress overwhelm you, or it will affect your health severely. That is precisely why he said you should stay here for a year or two before returning home so you can rest properly."

Ahmad shook his head and said, "I cannot stay here while knowing that the person who did this to me is out there living in peace, while my life was thrown into chaos for five years!"

"What kind of person do you mean? Do you know who did this to you?"

"No, I'm not certain, but I feel it in my bones. Everything is connected to the BC case I was handling at the time. Sadeeq, what I'm going to tell you, I want you to keep it between us until I verify my suspicion. During my investigation, I found that Hajiya Maryam has ties to a certain faction. I discovered this after planting a tracking device on her phone and car.

She knew about it, but to my surprise, she didn't show any concern; instead, she went right back to her other activities.

And on the day I was going to take that evidence to headquarters, I had an accident. Right before my eyes went dark, I saw a woman dressed in black come over to me and remove the tracker from my body. After that, I saw nothing more.

Before all of this happened, I had already begun feeling strange changes in my body. Sometimes I would do things without realizing it; at other times, I would feel an overwhelming urge to do wrong things—even craving substances like drugs or wanting to inflict harm and injury on people.

That thing terrified me, Sadeeq, but no one knew. And whenever I tried to sleep, I couldn't find rest. I was trapped in that state when this incident happened. I don't know what happened after that until yesterday when I finally regained my senses.

And yet you're telling me to sit back and rest while I'm in this condition?"

His voice trembled as he finished speaking. Sadeeq, who had stood like a statue, finally moved upon hearing Ahmad's concluding questions.

"Certainly, this is no small matter. But even so, please be patient and focus on recovering fully. Until then, I promise you I will help you with all my ability regarding this issue."

"Thank you for your care. I will rest just as Abbah requested, but before that, I want to ask you: are my team members still around, or what?"

"Well, Eemran is still around, Bilal is handling his case, and then there's Neelah."

"Good. Call Neelah and tell her I want to speak with her tomorrow; she should get ready."

"Um, alright. I'll check on her too, though I heard rumors that she might be transferred from her workstation."

"I will speak with Abbah to stop that transfer, because out of everyone, she is the only one I truly trust with this case. I will continue from..."

Summary

The excerpt covers two main interconnected scenes in "Sanadin Caca - Book 2":

  1. The Return of Ahmad: Five years after his disappearance and presumed death following a suspicious accident, Ahmad is miraculously discovered alive. AM Aliyu (his father) and Detective Sadeeq rush to him, finding him unconscious. To ensure his safety and medical recovery, AM Aliyu immediately arranges for him to be flown out to a private facility in Egypt.
  2. Family Fallout & Conspiracies: Back home, the news causes massive ripples. Sameer fights with his troublesome younger sister, Fatee. Hajiya Maryam (Ahmad's stepmother/antagonist) receives the news with cold anxiety, immediately contacting an operative named Neelah to check if it's really Ahmad and to protect their clandestine plans and a mysterious "box." Meanwhile, the obsessed Mulaifah throws a destructive tantrum upon learning Ahmad was flown away without her, leading to a physical altercation with Hajiya Maryam. Mammah (AM Aliyu's sister/Mulaifah's guardian) remains relatively composed and pragmatic.
  3. Ahmad Awakens in Cairo: Three days later in Egypt, Ahmad wakes up. He receives visits from his family (including Mammah and Mulaifah) and Sadeeq. Once alone with Sadeeq, Ahmad reveals startling secrets: he suspects his accident was an inside job tied to a "BC case" he was investigating, implicating Hajiya Maryam. He also describes terrifying physiological and psychological changes he experienced before the crash—uncontrolled dark impulses and memory lapses—suggesting he was being poisoned or manipulated. He asks Sadeeq to secure trusted team members like Neelah to secretly resume the investigation.

Description

The text is an intense narrative excerpt from a contemporary Hausa fiction novel belonging to the popular genre of domestic drama, family politics, elite corruption, and detective investigation. It highlights themes of betrayal, obsessive love, hidden conspiracies, power struggles within a wealthy household, and psychological suspense. The character dynamics showcase deep-seated animosities, particularly between Hajiya Maryam and the pro-Ahmad faction, alongside Mulaifah's unhinged romantic fixation.

Comments

  • Pacing and Atmosphere: The author successfully blends high-stakes crime investigation with messy family drama. The sudden transition from a dramatic hospital reunion to petty sibling arguments in the living room creates a vivid picture of a fractured, wealthy household.
  • Character Motives: Hajiya Maryam's reaction to Ahmad's survival underscores her involvement in deep criminal or political conspiracies (referenced via the "box" and the "BC case"). Her cold calculation contrasts sharply with Mulaifah's frantic, chaotic obsession.
  • Ahmad's Revelation: The introduction of psychological symptoms prior to Ahmad's accident (unexplained urges, memory blackouts) introduces a compelling medical/thriller mystery element, signaling that his "accident" was likely an engineered assassination or incapacitation attempt.

Conclusion

Ahmad's sudden return acts as a catalyst that shatters the fragile status quo of the household and threatens to unmask hidden crimes. While his family fights over his presence and future, Ahmad is already plotting his counter-attack from abroad, determined to expose the conspirators—specifically implicating Hajiya Maryam—with the help of trusted allies like Sadeeq and Neelah. Book 2 sets up a high-stakes collision between familial drama and a dangerous undercover conspiracy.
