Description

Sitting in the parlor, he wore a very soft, semi-transparent milk-colored yard fabric that made the fair-skinned vest underneath clearly visible. He had no cap on his head, and he looked uniquely handsome in a gentle way. However, he had his face completely scowled and tied up in a frown. A laptop was placed on the center table in front of him, and he was working on it, biting his lower red lip and sucking on it. From the moment he heard the sound of Yasmeen pushing the door open, his gut told him it was her stepping out, so he scowled his face even more and didn't even look in her direction.

The parlor was extremely well-decorated and grand. Upstairs was his private section, while Yasmeen’s space consisted of a parlor, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a dining area. She looked at him for ten seconds, then turned her head away, wondering where the kitchen might be. The door directly in front of her felt like the kitchen, so she walked quickly toward it.

"Masha Allah!" she whispered to herself, taking in the kitchen and everything inside it. Everything she could possibly need was right there. She opened a door and saw a store packed with food items. She put down her cooler and opened the fridge; to her surprise, it also contained various kinds of water and juice.

"The power of Allah!" she said, placing the drinks she brought along and closing the fridge, then leaning back against the cabinet. Her only fear was that she might run into him and he would speak to her, or worse, that she would go to greet him and he would disgrace her. Seeing no alternative, she stepped out of the kitchen, wondering how people's wedding nights usually turned out. Some came frantic, while others came completely confused.

Sadeeq Lamido, on the other hand, was surprised to see her walk right past without greeting him, even though he didn't want the greeting and wouldn't have answered her anyway.

"K!" he uttered in a harsh, unwelcoming tone. Yasmeen felt like she might pee in her trousers, but because she didn't want him to look down on her, she pretended not to hear him.

Furious, he said, "I know you hear me. Are you waiting for me to repeat myself before you come over?" He spoke in his soft voice, which to him sounded like he was shouting at her.

"If I come, what will I do to you?"

"You are very stupid!" he blurted out angrily, standing up. Yasmeen stepped back quickly, making a face, her heart pounding. Seeing that he was about to reach where she was, she quickly knelt down on the carpet, saying, "Please, just forgive me and leave me alone."

"Mitsssssuww!" He hissed, and with a sharp shout, said, "Get up and come in front of that table. I am going to beat out every bit of insolence you think you have in you."

"Forgive me, please!"

"You've added to your offense because in my rules, apologies are not accepted." Saying that, he flashed her a glare and sat back down. She came over to his side and knelt. He glanced at her briefly, hissed, and turned his head away.

Right at that moment, his phone on the center table started ringing. He forced a slight smile and picked it up upon seeing it was Suhan. From the other end, the moment he picked up, she burst into tears and asked with burning jealousy, "Please, baby, you're not with her, right?"

He took about five seconds before saying, "Ah-ah. What do you mean?" He scowled, pursed his lips, and said, "You know me well enough not to lie to you, just to impress you, right?"

"Do you mean you are going to sleep in the same bed with her?"

He let out a long hiss. At that exact moment, Yasmeen let out a scream, took a single leap, and threw herself right in front of him, hiding her face between his thighs, her body trembling as she said, "I swear, I am afraid of her, Yaya Sadeeq. Please chase her away!" she said in a tearful voice.

Suhan's chest, listening to everything over the phone, gave a violent thump. Before she could manage to utter a word, Sadeeq Lamido hastily cut the call, staring at Yasmeen, who had hidden her face against his thighs and was holding onto one of his hands while letting out small cries.

He scowled and let out a bizarre, terrifying roar, shouting, "Are you out of your mind?!"

Before he could even close his mouth, his huge brown-and-white cat arrived beside him, crying out slightly. "Oh Allah, I am going to die! Please chase it away!"

He let out a long hiss, realizing she had panicked entirely because of the cat. He yanked his hand away and began pushing her off while flashing a wicked smile. "I'm glad you're scared of it. But if you start crying and making noise again, I'll smash that crying mouth of yours. Are you going to move or what?"

"I swear, I am not going anywhere until you chase it away!" she finished saying, raising her head, her face smeared with tears, her body shaking.

He glared at her, and she glared right back. He widened his eyes at her, and she averted her gaze.

"Are you glaring at me?" he said in a fury.

She gave him no answer. In a fit of rage, he picked up the cat sitting to his right and hurled it right over her head so it landed directly on her body. Yasmeen let out a piercing scream, collapsed, and fainted on the spot.

Despite his anger, his heart skipped a beat, and he began to worry that something might actually happen to the innocent girl, since people could supposedly die from fear. But then he just hissed, gave her a strange look, picked up the cat, and went upstairs.

He didn't stay long before coming back down, giving her a ten-second look, then turning away while hissing and biting his lip. He walked into the kitchen, brought out a bottle of cold water, and came back out. Standing right beside her, and glaring at her as if she were awake, he began pouring the ice-cold water directly onto her body from where he stood.

Yasmeen let out another deafening scream as she opened her eyes, looked at herself and the parlor, and sat up, crying pitifully. "What did I do to you, Yaya Sadeeq, that you hate me this much and are destroying my life? Go ahead, you and Alla—"

"Are you talking back to me, me and Allah?" he asked furiously, stepping right up close to her.

She squeezed her eyes shut as the sole of his foot stepped directly onto the fingers of one of her hands. She used her other hand to try and push his foot away, but he showed no sign of moving it as he stood there. Eventually, he shouted at her, causing her to pull her hand away quickly.

He contorted his face, sat on a chair, closed his laptop, and picked up his phone, which was ringing. He let out a long hiss upon seeing 20 missed calls from Suhan. Ignoring the calls entirely, he looked down coldly at Yasmeen and said, "You, little rude girl, I already told you that you will live to regret intruding on me. And you are going to realize it, too. Open your useless ears and listen to me well: Rule number one—I do not want you to speak to me unless I am the one who speaks to you. Secondly, I do not want anything coming from your hands because I find you utterly repulsive. Next, you will act as a maid until the person who actually belongs to me arrives, and you will work for both of us. And the final two things—if you dare make the mistake of telling my parents that I did anything to you, well, you know the rest. And if you ever try to throw that body of yours at me again, I'll break your limbs. Cleaning this section is your duty, as well as cleaning mine. If I find any dirt in this house, I swear you will despise yourself. Are you going to get up and leave my space, or do I need to beat you up?" he said in a shout.

She remained silent, raising her large, white eyes that were now bloodshot with pure frustration at his heartless words, which lacked any humanity or respect for her status as his legally wedded wife. She didn't say a single word; she just stood up and walked into the bedroom she had come out of, leaving him sitting there watching her back with a look of pure hatred burning in his chest. He felt like setting himself on fire, completely at a loss for what kind of thought process to adopt. So, he simply picked up his things and went upstairs.

Yasmeen cried until she had no tears left, with no one to comfort her. Afterward, she performed ablution, began performing consecutive voluntary prayers, crying and making supplications, asking Allah to provide her with a way out. Around 1:00 AM, she finally fell asleep without changing the clothes she had on.

The next morning, as soon as daylight began to show, she woke up, performed her prayers and morning recitations. After finishing, she tidied the room and took a bath.

At around 7:34 AM, Yasmeen walked into the parlor wearing a brand-new long Ankara gown in golden super jaba. She only applied powder and perfume, tied her headscarf, and came out. The outfit fit her well, accentuating the shape of her body. She checked the kitchen and found a broom and dustpan. Even though the parlor wasn't dirty, she did her best to sweep it, burned incense in a burner, and scented the entire parlor. There was no joy on her face at all. Her only hope was that Sadeeq would leave the house so she could go and clean his section, because she didn't want to run into him or smell his scent while cleaning. Besides, she was dreading how she was going to clean his place, knowing that the slightest mistake would earn her verbal abuse.

While she was deep in thought, the door was pushed open. She turned around quickly, and her eyes locked with Sadeeq Lamido's. He was wearing a small short-sleeved t-shirt that highlighted his large arm muscles, along with three-quarter shorts that looked extremely good on him, showcasing his masculine build and dignity.

He threw a glare at her. She lowered her gaze, curtsied, and said, "Yaya Sadeeq, good morning."

Instead of answering, he let out a hiss, walked right past her, and headed upstairs, leaving behind the sweet fragrance of his cologne. She shook her head and vowed to finish greeting him...

"What did I tell you since yesterday about cleaning my section?"

"Or is it out of disrespect that I went to exercise, finished, and came back inside the house while you still haven't cleaned?" he finished, his face stern as he walked down the stairs.

Yasmeen's body was trembling as she stepped back, saying, "Please, forgive me. I will clean it. I didn't know you had gone out. I was actually waiting for you to leave so I could clean it for you."

He said nothing, continuing to march toward where she was.

"If you ever walk out again, you'll bring trouble upon yourself!" he said, seeing that she was heading toward the door. She stopped, intending to start apologizing, but he cut off her breath by saying, "Didn't I tell you I hate being apologized to?"

She fell silent.

"Move, let's go."

"Please, just wait here until I finish cleaning and come out."

"What? Are you giving me orders or what?" he said, pointing to himself.

She looked at him. He lunged forward as if he were going to hit her, and she closed her eyes.

"If you ever look at me like that again, I'll gouge out your eyes!" he finished, grabbing her arm.

She let out a scream, pulling back in resistance, her heart pounding.

"What am I, your playmate?" he asked, fed up with her constant talking that was testing his patience.

"Please, I don't want to go in while you're there."

Unable to speak out of frustration, he yanked her with immense force. Unwillingly, she had to follow him to avoid him causing her physical harm. Crying and sobbing, she followed him as they went upstairs. He looked at her, twisted his face, and let out a hiss.

As they entered the parlor, the cool fragrance of his perfumes hit her nose.

"If you please, start with the bedroom," he said, sitting on a chair.

She stood still, refusing to enter the bedroom. In a rage, he said, "What kind of a child are you? Or is it because this scumbag is sitting here that you won't enter, for fear he might follow you?"

"I swear, I didn't say that."

He looked her up and down, pursed his lips haughtily, and said, "Even if I were a scumbag, I see nothing about your body that I would want. Damn it, get out of my sight and go inside. You stink!"

She hurried inside. She stood in the room looking around. He had deliberately left everything out of place. She twisted her mouth and began making the bed, which had luxurious covers, then folded the clothes he had discarded and put them in the wardrobe. However, a pair of boxers left on the carpet was too much for her to look at. Still, she cleaned the room thoroughly, even though it wasn't very dirty.

When she finished, she headed to the bathroom. She stood there, looking at the bathroom in bewilderment. Some items she knew how to use, while others she didn't. She just looked around until she spotted a bottle of shower gel. Without even reading what it was for, she began squeezing it all over the white tiles inside the bathroom floor. Once she finished pouring it, she put it down, picked up a brand-new broom that was left there, and knelt down to start scrubbing.

The slipperiness of the shower gel betrayed her. She let out a wild, deafening scream as she fell hard to the floor—Thump!

With lightning speed, Sadeeq Lamido rushed into the bathroom with the intent of seeing why she was screaming like that. But the moment his foot touched the tiles, whoosh!—he slipped completely and crashed right on top of Yasmeen, who was sprawled out on the tiled floor.

Yasmeen quickly squeezed her eyes shut, feeling a weird tingling sensation all over her body, as this was the first time she was feeling a man's body against hers. His head was resting near her ear, and she could feel the hot puff of his breath, while his sideburns brushed against the side of her neck.

Even though she had taken a bad fall and her right foot was hurting, she mustered the courage to let out a cry and push him away. He raised his head with bold confidence—since he had also taken a bump and hurt his hand—looked at her with a stern face, refused to speak, and didn't get up either, because he wanted to see how far her dramatics would go.

"Oh Allah, Yaya Sadeeq, please get off me!"

"Mitsssssuww! If you weren't a village girl, would you wash a toilet with bath shower gel?" he said, dragging his body away and shooting her a glare.

She averted her gaze, wiping away her tears, and sat up with difficulty, shaking one of her hands and saying, "Oh, my foot!"

He let out another hiss and walked away, thinking that if he kept pandering to this girl's nonsense, she might actually drive him crazy.

"Come and get me out of here, I can't walk!"

Ignoring her completely, he headed toward the wardrobe and stripped off the three-quarter shorts that had been stained by the shower gel. He also removed his t-shirt and was about to wrap a towel around his waist when he heard Yasmeen crying out, "Oh, Yaya Sadeeq, please come and get me out!"

With a savage blow to the side of the wardrobe, he shouted, "Truly, I have been cheated! My life has been cheated by pairing me with this girl!" He let out a hiss after wrapping the towel around his waist and headed into the bathroom with the intention of dragging her out by force—though he refused to carry her.

When Yasmeen saw him standing there without a shirt, she panicked all over again, covering her eyes and crying out, "For God's sake, forgive me, I swear I didn't—"

"Are you mad?" he said angrily, glaring at her. "Get up and get out of my sight before I break your leg! And whether you can walk or not, you will finish the job I gave you, or your body will regret it!"

Unable to speak, she crawled out crying. He slammed the door shut hard.

No matter how hard Yasmeen tried to stand up and walk, she couldn't. Her foot was already beginning to swell. With great difficulty, she crawled back down to his parlor, sat on the carpet, and wept bitterly. Her entire body smelled of his cologne. Whenever she thought of his broad chest and thick hair, she felt a terrible fear of him.

After 45 minutes passed, Lamido pushed the door open and emerged from his bedroom. His signature scent announced him first. She raised her head, and their eyes met. He scowled his face again. He was dressed sharply in a dark blue suit, looking like a Black American. His phones and car keys were in his hand. He always amazed her—how could someone be in a perpetual state of anger, with not an ounce of softness in him?

"Yaya Sadeeq!"

He ignored her entirely and headed for the door.

"You can hear me, please! I swear I can't walk, save my life!"

Again, he ignored her completely and opened the door.

"Yaya Sadeeq!!"

He turned back, his face grim and burning with resentment. "What is it?"

"My foot!"

"So what?"

"You know very well that because of you—"

"I am not going to cancel my appointments because of you. From now on, when you are given a task, you need to be sensible and pay attention instead of acting like a village bumpkin throwing tantrums around people!"

"Well! As far as I know, everyone has roots in a village, and our town isn't even a village, it's a Local Government area—"

"Mitsssssuww! I don't have time for you. Even Suhan, whom I love, doesn't dare waste my time, let alone you, stupid."

Saying that, he walked away haughtily with the proud gait of a prominent man, rushing because he had an important court case to attend to.

Yasmeen wiped her tears, wondering what kind of intense hatred and animosity he held for her. At the same time, she felt a hot surge of anger and resentment toward this Suhan whose name she kept hearing from people's mouths.

Seeing that it was already 9:00 AM, she crawled downstairs to get her phone. She wanted to call Lami and Baba to check on their health, but she lacked the courage to call them. She just stared at the phone screen.

Right then, Zarah and Farooq walked into the parlor. One look at Yasmeen was all it took for Zarah to realize she had been crying; even her voice gave away that she had wept. They dropped off breakfast and greeted her. Yasmeen called Farooq over to sit by her because she loved children.

Softly, Zarah said, "Please, Aunty Yasmeen, have patience and calm down. I know Yaya Sadeeq's ways aren't easy..."

"Ah, don't worry, he didn't do anything to me! I just slipped in the bathroom, bumped my foot, and now I can't walk."

"Subhanallah! Let me go tell Baba Hassu (their maid) to come check your foot and see if she can massage it for you."

Yasmeen felt immense relief and thanked her profusely. Zarah left Farooq chatting with Yasmeen, and soon Zarah returned with Baba Hassu, who examined her foot and confirmed it was a sprain. After finishing, she applied a traditional medicine that Mama had given Zarah and bandaged it. After she and Farooq had breakfast, Yasmeen finally called Baba and Lami.

At around 12:11 PM, Sadeeq pushed open the parlor door and entered with a greeting—though it was muttered under his breath, and Yasmeen, Zarah, and Farooq didn't hear it.

Yasmeen's heart skipped a beat when she saw him, and she quickly lowered her head. Zarah greeted him, and he answered coldly as he headed toward the dining area to eat breakfast, knowing that Mama had sent food over for them. Yasmeen felt as though she knew he would want her to pack up whatever food was left after he ate. He sat down, checking everything. She stole glances at him, wishing she could go over and ask if he needed anything, but the fear of his cruelty stopped her.

He ate his breakfast while intermittently answering phone calls—though they couldn't hear what he was saying. When he finished, he went upstairs. He didn't stay long before coming back down, stopping right in the middle of the stairs to shoot Yasmeen a look that made her heart pound. He noticed she was wearing the same clothes from earlier, and her hair was unbound, gathered into a messy black bun at the back. He twisted his mouth and vowed to tell her never to wear hair extensions inside the house again, and that she must always change her clothes.

"K!"

Yasmeen quickly looked up, but he had already walked away.

Zarah had noticed how terrified Yasmeen was simply because he called her name, and she shook her head with deep pity. Zarah stood up and said, "Aunty Yasmeen, let's go; we'll come back when Yaya leaves."

"Please, sit down, don't go!"

"Alright then." Without further words, Zarah left.

Yasmeen's heart was pounding, convinced he was going to unleash fury on her because she hadn't cleaned the parlor yet. Sure enough, as she pushed the door open to enter, he was standing right behind it, seemingly waiting for her. His face was devoid of warmth. He closed the door and leaned his back against it.

She just stood there, hiding her racing heart without speaking to him.

"K!"

She looked up quickly, lowering her gaze instantly out of confusion, as she thoroughly disliked making eye contact with him.

In his cool voice, he said, "From today on, if I call you and you hesitate, I'll trample you."

She said nothing and knelt down.

"Why don't you ever listen?"

"What did I even do, please?"

"Oh, you don't even know? When I come out with my cat, you'll find out."

"Please, forgive me, don't bring it out, I swear I'm scared of it."

He pursed his lips, and giving a direct command, said, "I'm giving you 15 minutes to clean this parlor. Even if your foot falls off, I couldn't care less."

Finishing his words, he walked away, leaving behind the wonderful scent of his cologne.

She let out a sigh of relief, feeling deep self-pity, yet determined to do her absolute best to obey him. With a heavy heart, she cleaned the parlor meticulously. Once she finished, she noticed another door. She peeked inside and saw it was his exercise room. As she turned around, she saw a man standing there.

The sheer shock of the scare made her feel like she might wet her trousers. "Did you keep something with me that you're snooping around?"

She stayed silent, heading toward the door.

"Hey! Did I give you permission to leave while I'm talking?"

She turned back and burst into tears, saying, "What do you want me to do with my life? Please, just leave me alone!"

He said nothing, standing there pondering what he could do to torment her further. Then, a lazy smile crept onto his face. He sat down on a chair and said, "Come here."

Without argument, she came over to the side of the chair where he was sitting. He pointed toward the doorway of the parlor with his finger. After taking his sweet time looking composed, he said coldly, "Starting from all the way over there, you are going to frog-jump all the way to that TV stand. You'll do it back and forth continuously. That is your punishment for talking back to me without manners. And lastly—if you cry at me again, I swear you'll regret it. Now get up and start."

She said nothing. She began hopping, panting and sweating. He sat comfortably on the chair, propping his long legs up on the center table while typing on his phone. Soon, he started another phone call with Suhan, doing it specifically to piss Yasmeen off, talking about how much he had missed her.

Her heavy breathing and the sound of her collapsing onto the floor made him glance over. She was lying unconscious, drenched in sweat. With his sexy eyes, he fixed his gaze on her, watching her. He suddenly felt like maybe he hadn't handled things well.

That made him stand up, put his phone aside, and walk over to her. He picked her up and laid her down on a two-seater sofa, twisting his mouth and muttering, "Such a fragile weakling."

Another part of his mind argued, What business is it of yours how heavy she is?

He walked over to the fridge in the parlor, grabbed some water, came back, sat on the edge of the sofa's armrest, and began splashing it onto her face.

She let out a soft sigh, her lips moving as she silently recited prayers in Arabic, while hot tears streamed down her beautiful face.

Summary

This chapter depicts the tense, emotionally abusive, and domestic dynamic between Sadeeq Lamido and his newlywed wife, Yasmeen. Confined to a grand but oppressive household, Yasmeen tries to navigate her role as an unvalued wife and forced maid while dealing with Sadeeq’s cold cruelty, psychological torment, and obsession with his former/favorite love interest, Suhan. Despite her fear, injuries (from a bathroom slip caused by Sadeeq's harsh demands), and mistreatment, Yasmeen continues to try and obey him, enduring panic attacks, fainting spells, and constant humiliation.

Description

A dramatic and emotionally intense domestic fiction excerpt focusing on themes of forced marriage, emotional cruelty, social class friction (village vs. city), and vulnerability. The narrative highlights the stark contrast between Sadeeq’s arrogant, domineering, and immaculate exterior and Yasmeen’s fragile, overwhelmed, and resilient nature.

Comments

  • Character Dynamics: Sadeeq is portrayed as an intensely toxic, hyper-critical, and emotionally detached husband who uses intimidation and cruelty to assert control. Yasmeen serves as the classic sympathetic, oppressed protagonist whose endurance evokes deep empathy.
  • Themes: The chapter heavily explores the pain of unrequited obligation in marriage, psychological intimidation, jealousy (via Suhan), and the psychological impact of fear.
  • Pacing: The scene moves swiftly from domestic chores and tense confrontations to physical mishaps (the slippery bathroom) and emotional breaking points.

Conclusions

Yasmeen remains trapped in a loveless and abusive union where her humanity and dignity are constantly undermined by Sadeeq. However, her persistence in prayer, obedience, and endurance sets the stage for future emotional development—either through a transformation in Sadeeq's character or a turning point for Yasmeen's agency.
